ST GEORGE FOR ENGLAND
Today 23 April, England celebrates St George’s Day. Churches and public buildings will fly the Red Cross flag of St. George, England’s patron Saint.
Legend has it that a town was being terrorised by a dragon who was eating all their sheep. The local people decided to placate this fearsome creature by sacrificing a beautiful maiden. When St. George heard of this he rushed to save her. He slayed the dragon and gave the young woman a red rose.
The red rose became England’s national flower and it will be worn today as a mark of loyalty and affection for our Mother Country.
