St Dorothea’s Day - 6th February

It was anciently believed that the heaviest snowfall occurred on this day. Not so here in Wales, for to-day is mild with a slight wind coming in from the west.

Yesterday we enjoyed a woodland walk, it was quite still in the wood, the only sounds came from snapping twigs under foot and the call of crows in the lofty trees. ‘Lambs tails’ (catkins) hung daintily from bare hazel twigs and drifts of snowdrops were a delight to encounter

Oh how wonderful! I'm so looking forward to discover spring flowers again when going for walks. No sign off snowdrops here so far, even not im my garden where we planted a lot last fall.

Hm Val, I dont think snowdrops are made for Australian temperatures. I think they may need the cold.

We certainly have both Snowdrops and Snowflakes in Australia. The latter have a more bell-shaped flower than the snowdrops and have a tiny dot of green near the top of each petal.

Carol - Australia certainly isn't hot all over and many towns have wonderful Spring Bulb displays. I will try and post some photos from one of Australia's most famous tulip spectaculars - Floriade, right here in Canberra. It runs for a month from mid-September and features many different bulbs, other than tulips, and a wide variety of annuals, too.

Marion - thank you for the comments - I enjoyed reading about your daughter in law....more about those cultural trads at easter time.
I like the look of those woods, it reminds me of my favourite local walk when I lived in the UK - in rural buckinhshire - the woods were called burnham beeches - oh the smell of those woods...your post brought back some happy memories.

Pleased you all enjoyed the snowdrops, the first breath of spring, although as you know, we already have daffodils in flower.

Alice, Your comments about the Floriade reminded me about the Floriade they held in Holland. When I worked in the travel business I arranged many tours there. It was wonderful. I think it was held every ten years. Maybe it still is, I don't know. I wonder if there is anyone out there that can say if Holland still has its Floriade?
Thank you for stopping by Maggie Ann

I'd love to take this walk with you Marion. It looks so secluded and peaceful in those woods. The snowdrops are just beautiful...such delicate flowers. I have them growing ...they spread like mad, but are so welcome at the end of winter and early spring. Do yours have any perfume? I don't think ours do.
